Is cussing a sin?

A question among a lot of Christians is: is cussing a sin? It doesn’t explicitly say in the Bible not to cuss, but thats because it didn’t exist back then! So in modern times, would Jesus have allowed people to cuss?
In my opinion, the answer would be no. James 3:8-10 says:
“But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
So, it is stated very clearly, that you should not curse with the same mouth that worships the Lord. Ephesians 4:29 says:
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
The Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of “edification” is, “instruction and improvement, especially in morality.” This verse is a good reminder, not only to not cuss, but also to be very careful that your mouth lifts others up, rather than bring them down.
1 Corinthians 10:23 says:
“‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things are helpful. ‘All things are lawful,’ but not all things build up.”
So there you have it. Is cussing a sin? No. But is it helpful, and does it lift others up? No! So don’t it! Instead, focus on using your tongue to always edify the people around you.
